National Championships Strathclyde Country Park, near Glasgow, on 16, 17 and 18 July 2010

Sam Coverley, Shane Dickinson & Ed Grisedale represented Northwich RC at the National Championships in Scotland last weekend. The event attracts the best rowers in the country and is held on a purpose-built multi-lane Lake (Loch) of over 2000 meters at Strathclyde Country Park. Ed’s races began on Friday when in his Single Scull he competed in a time trial to reduce the field from 26 to 12. He looked very strong and even overtook the sculler that set off before him, securing his place in the semi final later that day. Ed then joined Lee Harrison from Trentham in a J16 Double Scull heat; they beat the rest of the competition by 5 lengths giving them a Finals place without having to race again. The weather conditions were getting progressively worse for Ed’s Semi-Final single scull heat, one of the other scullers unfortunately capsized but Ed managed to keep control and gained a place in the following day’s Final. Just like The Open at St. Andrews, the competition was suspended due to the windy conditions until 6.30 that evening

On the Saturday the weather had moderated a little, however Ed in his single scull found the going hard in the middle section of his final and finished 5th overall. He didn’t have much time to dwell on this before he was back in a boat, this time with Lee to compete in the Double Sculls Final. The last 500 meters were very exciting as they pushed to try and gain a medal but unfortunately were beaten by the Norwich Pair who had recently returned from France after representing GB. Sam & Shane who were competing for the first time in this kind of environment were in the J18 Double Sculls event, and although they didn’t manage to get further than their heat they were pleased that they beat their local rivals Runcorn. They gained lots of experience and now know what they have to do next year when they will be one of the more seasoned crews in the competition
